The eight moon phases
The Moon cycles from new to full and back roughly every 29.5 days. Each night it shows a little more or a little less of its sunlit face — these are the eight phases it moves through.
New Moon
The Moon sits between Earth and Sun, its lit face turned away — all but invisible.
Waxing Crescent
A slim sliver of light returns on the right and grows night by night.
First Quarter
Half the disk is lit — a quarter of the way through the cycle.
Waxing Gibbous
More than half lit and still brightening toward full.
Full Moon
Earth lies between Sun and Moon; the whole face glows. Each month's full moon has a name.
Waning Gibbous
Just past full, the light starts to retreat from the right.
Last Quarter
Half lit again, now on the left, three-quarters through the cycle.
Waning Crescent
A thinning sliver before the Moon goes dark and the cycle begins anew.
Notable moons we flag
Some nights are rarer than others. When your date lands on one, we'll call it out.
Full moon names
Each month's full moon carries an almanac name — the Wolf Moon, Snow Moon, Harvest Moon and more.
Supermoon
A full moon near the Moon's closest approach to Earth, appearing slightly larger and brighter.
Blue Moon
The second full moon to fall within a single calendar month — it happens every two to three years.
Lunar eclipse
When Earth's shadow falls across a full moon, tinting it from soft copper to deep red.
Moon phases — frequently asked questions
How is the moon phase calculated?
We use the astronomical algorithms of Jean Meeus to find the new moons that bracket your date, then derive the exact illuminated fraction and phase for that night — no lookup tables, accurate to the day for any date from 1950 to 2100.
How accurate is the moon phase shown?
The phase name and illumination percentage are accurate to the day. The Moon's precise tilt and orientation depend on your exact location and time, which the tool does not yet factor in.
What are the eight moon phases?
In order: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent. A full cycle takes about 29.5 days.
What is a Blue Moon?
A Blue Moon is the second full moon to fall within a single calendar month. It happens roughly every two to three years.
What is a Supermoon?
A Supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the Moon is near its closest point to Earth, making it look slightly larger and brighter than usual.
Can I see the moon phase for my birthday?
Yes — pick any date from 1950 to 2100 and you'll see the exact phase that lit the sky that night, along with celestial gift ideas to match the moment.
